Ribbon Cutting: City of Harlingen Beautification Project

City of Harlingen elected representatives and administrators received a $250,000 beautification grant thanks to a first-place finish in the 2015 Governor’s Community Achievement Award competition. The Governor’s Community Achievement Awards annually endows Texas communities with a share of landscaping prize money, to be used in the construction of a beautification project with the wining community.

The beautification project selected by the City was the Harlingen Interchange at the intersection of I-69 and I-2 Corridors. The project involved planting colorful, low maintenance and resilient plants to our environment. It incorporated concrete edging which separates the landscaping from the brick pavers, the decomposed crushed granite and the grass area. Southern Landscapes which was the successful bidder was the general contractor. The landscaping improvement will expand to the North and South right-of-ways of Tyler and Harrison. In addition to the ground landscaping plants, LED color changing accent lighting was placed underneath the overpass structure. These light fixtures will have the ability to change colors sequentially or on one fixed color. “We are extremely honored to have received an award of such prominence, but I must say it’s all due to the spirit of volunteerism, partnerships and our proud citizens,” said Mayor Chris Boswell.”
